As the final months of his eighth grade year were consumed by pain and dizzy spells, Finn stopped going to school and had to sit out of soccer practice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\">After five inconclusive visits, a new doctor saw Finn and finally ordered an MRI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\">\u201cI remember sitting in the tube of the MRI, worrying about how my hair was going to look afterwards,\u201d shares Finn. \u201cBecause really the only thing that mattered to me at that time was being popular and having the perfect hair.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\">Not long after the scan, his common teenage concerns were exceeded by something much more critical. Finn had cancer in his brain and his spine, and from the moment he received this news, every priority changed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\">On the way to Children\u2019s Hospital Colorado, where he would proceed to undergo a lower lumbar puncture, brain surgery, four rounds of chemotherapy and 30 days of radiation, Finn asked his mom if he was going to die.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\">\u201cAt that point, we didn\u2019t know,\u201d he shares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\">Now 18 years old and in his first year of college, Finn is a true survivor. But cancer isn\u2019t the only battle he has had to fight.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\">\u201cThe hardest part was coming back home,\u201d he says, \u201cand only being known as \u2018the kid with cancer.\u2019 Nobody wanting to talk to me at school because they were afraid to say something. Or they just didn\u2019t know how to confront me \u2026 I didn\u2019t want to be the cancer kid. I didn\u2019t want to be the person who was damaged or broken.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"571\" height=\"800\" src=\"http:\/\/vailhealthbh.staging.vail.fortyapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/04\/Finn-main_reg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-405\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vailhealthbh.staging.vail.fortyapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/04\/Finn-main_reg.jpg 571w, https:\/\/vailhealthbh.staging.vail.fortyapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/04\/Finn-main_reg-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/vailhealthbh.staging.vail.fortyapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/04\/Finn-main_reg-9x12.jpg 9w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 571px) 100vw, 571px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Depression After Cancer<\/strong><br>Finn says he began struggling with his mental health the moment he was diagnosed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI pretty much became depressed on the spot, and didn\u2019t want to fight for my life anymore,\u201d he says. \u201cI didn\u2019t want to go through this. I didn\u2019t see the light at the end of the tunnel. That was very hard to overcome.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the hardest times, Finn describes his depression as a dense fog that clouded his mood.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI wanted to be happy \u2026 kind of like when a rainstorm hits and you want the sun to come out, but it\u2019s going to rain harder and harder until it becomes sunny again,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finn says cancer changed him profoundly \u2014 physically, emotionally and mentally. Physically, he lost more than 25 pounds and wasn\u2019t able to return to soccer or cross-country running in the way he wished he could. His eyes were damaged, and his endocrine system was knocked completely out of whack.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m going to have to take pills lifelong, and injections. And you know, it can strain a person, especially when you have a big scar on your head and scars everywhere, and your veins are black and blue from being poked and prodded,\u201d he shares. \u201cThat physical pain manifested itself a lot mentally and emotionally. Specifically, mentally.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was a point during his sophomore year in high school when Finn says he felt the lowest he\u2019d ever felt. He just wasn\u2019t able to be as happy as he used to be. His parents noticed his lethargy and extreme apathy, and they took him back to Children\u2019s Hospital where he was diagnosed with depression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He did not want to accept any of it, nor admit that he was \u201cdamaged and bruised.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd it was also very emotional,\u201d he shares, \u201cespecially when you\u2019re in treatment or a hospital like that, it doesn\u2019t feel like you have a choice very often. And they\u2019re just like, \u2018Oh, you have to get this,\u2019 or \u2018You\u2019re going to do this.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf I were to feel any pain, it would just make it worse. So instead I chose to just become numb, and as if I wasn\u2019t even really there. I was kind of living out-of-body and because I did that, I had a really hard time processing what was happening and what I was feeling. And that\u2019s a lot where writing came in, because even though I couldn\u2019t feel that, I could write. My writing gives me permission to feel what I cannot always express.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A New Chapter<\/strong><br>Along with the daily practice of writing, Finn attributes much of his initial and continued psychological healing to attending Roundup River Ranch, a camp for kids battling or surviving serious illnesses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen I went there, I wasn\u2019t treated as somebody with a bald head,\u201d he shares.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was just treated as a boy who was trying to have fun. I was just treated as a person who was robbed a part of his childhood.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finn also began seeing a counselor. He says this helped him see that his illness can only define him if he lets it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI did not want it to define my life, and I made a promise in one of those therapy sessions to never let my pain take over my life, because I have a choice,\u201d he says. \u201cI have a choice to either let my pain ruin every moment, or to let it build my character. I, from then on, let it build my character.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finn also found a new passion: coffee. He says it was one of the first things that brought happiness back to his life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou know, coffee is that thing that brings people together, or tea, or whatever it may be,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s the thing that brought me to other people to show myself as somebody that\u2019s not defined by their illness \u2026 Coffee was the bridge between my old world and my new world. And my old self and my new self. And finding out my new self through the lens of coffee largely cured my depression in many ways.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finn plans to either double major or independently design a major in poetry and business administration at Colorado College. While he misses his family and his three dogs, Finn is ready for a fresh start.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m very excited to go to college and have nobody know me as \u2018the kid with cancer.\u2019 I\u2019m just Finn, I\u2019m just a fresh slate, fresh identity and it&#8217;s exciting, and it\u2019s also nerve-racking, of course.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New challenges are inevitable, yet Finn says he\u2019s not afraid to ask for help or support when he may need it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf I ever become depressed again, or I\u2019m having a rough time, I\u2019m no longer afraid to reach out because I\u2019m no longer afraid to be labeled as somebody who\u2019s \u2018broken\u2019 or \u2018damaged,\u2019\u201d he shares. \u201cI had not accepted myself for a long time. And it has taken years for me to be able to say, \u2018I had cancer and it does not define me.
